Here are two inspiring posts on creative aging and memory impairment.

The first is an interview on baby boomers and creative aging with Dr. Robert Butler, founder of the National Institute of Aging and former CEO of the Longevity Institute. Excerpts from this interview appear in the documentary film “I Remember Better When I Paint.”

The second is an article from The Atlantic entitled “Creative Aging: The Emergence of Artistic Talents” by Richard C. Senelick, MD. This article looks at how “depending which part of the brain is affected, different skills will be preserved or impaired in various types of cognitive decline and dementia. This gradual reformation is what may allow the emergence of new artistic abilities.”

I Remember Better When I Paint screens at the Hong Kong Science Museum as part of the museum’s Science Theatre series on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 3:30 pm.

The screening will be in English with Chinese subtitles.

This informative documentary offers pivotal new insights into the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease through creative arts. Leading international neurologists share findings which support the transformative power of drawing, painting, music and museum visits, illustrating how the parts of the brain related to emotions and creativity are largely spared by the disease, and therefore dramatically changing the way we look at Alzheimer’s and related disorders. The film shows how creative workshops are being embraced as exciting and effective therapy methods in several countries worldwide, opening doors of communication between those living with the disease and their caregivers and families.

I Remember Better When I Paint also tells the compelling story of Hilda Gorenstein, an artist known as Hilgos, who was left lost, agitated and uncommunicative by Alzheimer’s disease but regained a quality of life through returning to painting with the help of students from School of Art Institute of Chicago. The Hilgos Foundation now awards scholarships to students who help those suffering from memory loss, acknowledging and celebrating the astonishing impact of the arts on people with Alzheimer’s. The film features Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of actress Alzheimer’s Rita Hayworth who had Alzheimer’s.
